Oladipo and Gordon can play together in the same backcourt. The only thing is Gordon would have to bring the ball up, but in this day & age, I'm not sure that's a big deal.
Oladipo would allow Gordon to guard the lesser of the guards and thus, save Gordon's legs for offense.
The problem IMO is that offensively, Gordon would be the only guy in the backcourt with legit scoring skills either with the ball or off the ball. And Oladipo just scares the hell outta me on the NBA level. We're talking about a guy whose biggest strength is the fact that he's athletic and he works hard defensively. At the NBA level, I'm not sure he's gonna guard the elite scorers any better than Rivers + everyone is athletic at the NBA level. So where is he gonna set himself apart? The other thing is that I'm not sure he's 6'5 (just what my eyes tell me, I have no link). If he is 6'5, 5'6 of it is his legs (that's an exaggeration before anyone replies with 'his upper body is not 11 inches tall you idiot')
Thing I think everyone ignores with regards to drafting a 2 like Oladipo or Benny Mac is this. Gordon will only play about 35 minutes a game, our current SF crop is pretty week, but if we find one worthy of 35 minutes it means for 13 minutes a game we can play some small ball with EG and Oladipo/Mc on the wings, cos frankly a 2nd unit 3 won't usually be able to dominate a decent 2. A Harden-like role from when he was with the Thunder.
96 minutes between the 2/3 spot can easily be shared by A 2 guard set and 1 legit SF with minutes varying on matchups, but that's still 32 minutes a game available per player. Wether Monty can work the rotations properly is the only issue.
Also as said many times before there are many serviceable 3's available this year.
I do also worry about Oladipos ability to impact an NBA game though. Prefer Mc and Bazz atm (bazz could be a good enough defender and rebounds pretty well too and gives us a player willing to go left)
Bazz def. is about as solid as it can be for a guy who snowbirds on def. dude was screaming during their first round loss "Defense?! Ain't nobody got time to Dat!"
He could play defense, and be ok at it, but the greats in this league never approached defense like a leper like Bazz does.
But what has he shown to make you believe that he can be a good defender, let alone great? Dude is a black hole once the ball goes to him.
Solid defender. Not great. His athletic ability has shown me he has the talent to do that. Being a black hole doesn't really have much to do with defense. I think we all can agree the guy can score, and if we can't i don't care to argue about it TBH. He has the wingspan, quickness and speed to be a solid (ie not a liability) defender is all i think is being said. No one's going to mistake him for Pippen.
You can't just judge a guy form just one year of college and say he can't play D. Everyone said Rivers couldn't play D coming out of college, but he was probably our best on ball defender this I think Monty can do the same thing to Bazz
I just like his inside out game. He can score from anwhere and he has some tools to work with. Hes versatile.
Does "solid" mean "avg" or "above avg?" Because from "non-existent" to "average" is doable. From "non-existent" to "good" will be more work than he is probably willing to do.
I would say average to slightly above average. He's not going to be known for his defense or make an all defensive team ever, but he won't be continuously be scorched by the opposing teams player at said position.
People here apparently value my opinion more than I realized. Maybe I should start brushing up on my diction.
The road to NBA stardom is littered with guys who could make shots and had physical attributes. The guys just never honed in on the skills. Lord knows the hornets have bad more than plenty of them on their roster.
But time will tell. Will he fill into the guy people think he can be, or will he rest on his laurels?
You don't know what you don't know. Even the home runs aren't always home runs.
Sometimes she is a he ( as some guys on this board can attest to).
I would still take Oladipo after Smart, McLemore, Noel. Those 4 I am fine with, but if we took Bazz I am sure I would learn how to deal with it.
True story. Julian Wright.
No, but he had all kinds of "potential", phisical attributes, and was a great facilitator. Just another guy who didnt make it because he never developed his game.
Sarcasm... I thought it was quite blatant.
Guess not.
But hey, if at first you don't succeed...become a bobcats fan.
Cody Zeller...what has the tourney done to his stock?
Oladipo is my first choice, if he's already gone and Mclemore is still there I take him and either have him and rivers off the bench try to make a splash in FA for a SF or I trade Gordon for a SF
EDIT: Keep in mind I'm not a "dump Gordon advocate", just saying if we take someone like Mclemore it gives us flexibility with what we can do with Gordon.
B-Mac will be a non factor in the NBA. These kids this season all lack something that will make them irrelevant at the next level. However im willing to eat crow
Yeah I'm not thrilled about McElmore or Smart. I think the top will be very good players, but nothing to change the balance of the league. I'm remain steadfast that Burke will be the biggest impact player from this draft. After that it's a crap shoot of high reward mid to low risk prospects.
Depends on the system he lands in. If they allow him to be a ball dominate guard like Paul/Nash or how we do with Vasquez this year I think he'll be better than Lawson(from a production perspective). Lawson can get in the paint with ease, but Burke makes such great decision once he breaches the opposing defense's interior. I expect that to get better at the next level with the floor spacing in the NBA.
I don't think he has the insane quickness and speed that Ty has, but really no one does so is that fair?
I think that Burke will be a Ty/CP3 mixture at a lower tier. Is that a guy you want on your team? I do.
Anyone have Lawson's defensive stats? Is he a liability on defense? That was some people's assertion on Burke that he would be a liability on defense so Dell won't touch him. I think that's asinine. He's no defensive presence but I don't think he'd be the liability that Vasquez is.
I'm becoming mum on mcmlemore.
Porter
Oladipo
Smart
Burke
Noel
If we don’t land the players we want at 8, one option could be to trade our pick for two top 20 picks and land Brandon Paul (SG- Illinois) and Khalif Wyatt (PG-Temple).
BP is a baller and can play heavy minutes at SG when Gordon is out. KW is a physical PG that can muscle his way against smaller defenders. The only problem with these picks is that they are both going to be taking minutes away from rivers and I don’t the hornets’ organization doing that.
Maclemore 2 points 0-9 fg.
These guys really don't want it. I respect Marshall Henderson.
First take just brought up great points about this draft class. Basically saying Shabazz is the only guy that may have All-Star potential.
Out of sight, out of mind. Nerlens Noel is the player I want. Also, CJ McCollum is intruiging to me.
I think Burke's athleticism is fine.
Personally at this point, I think Burke is the only person who can escalate their stock significantly. He's a late lottery guy right now, everyone else seems to be pretty locked in until the combine & workouts.
Don't think anyone who performed poorly in the first round should have opinions changed on them. Burke even played poorly in the first round, almost all the big names did
I think Oladipo has jumped a bit in some people's eyes. Not much, but perhaps over guys like Len and Bennett depending on the team. Some had him as low as 8 or so.
