Blessing in disguise . We found it now instead of later. Gentry seems fine.
The injury at Duke was a freak accident. Like you said, his shoe blew out. That can't really be factored into discussions regarding proclivity to injury, imo.
And he was shut down in summer league for a light bruise from knee to knee contact, and because he wasn't in full playing condition. Even Griff admitted in like, 5 interviews immediately after it was announced he was out that in reality, he was absolutely fine, they just didn't wanna risk anything for the sake of Summer League.
This is his first real ''injury'' that wasn't caused by something weird like a shoe blow out. I trust Aaron Nelson to advise Zion on his weight: if he needs to lose some more, Nelson will tell him and make sure he does. We don't even know how much he actually weighs.
That's good. If it's like, oh well he could be back in 10 days, but we wanna give him another 10 just to be super safe and do rehab and get him some practices before games, then that's totally good with me. Means he loses 3 weeks (in that imaginary scenario) but who cares as long as he's healthy long term.
I like that they are taking caution early. It’s important that he loses weight but how much fat does he have on his body? Seriously?
I hope they play him 27mpg to protect his knees.
Zion should shed 15-20lbs, develop a good jump shot and 3 point shot, be a just a little more conservative in how he plays, and manage his minutes so he only plays as much as we need him to to win.
Melli, NAW, Favors, Redick, Kenny, and Ingram etc all have to step up. I like the idea of putting NAW in the game and letting him develop.
Remember, this is a long term slow build. We can’t rush it. If we make the playoffs great... however, if we miss the playoffs my hope is our young guys develop and we get Cleveland’s 2020 1st round pick and have a shot at landing 2 solid rookies in the next draft. Patience in critical.

I hope my November 7th tickets is right on schedule
This is the question everyone wants an answer to. How much body fat is there? I personally don't see a lot of fat, plus he's only 19.
They let him play through it because they were trying to build the hype machine. It’s now built, so he can sit. Pretty reckless if you ask me. We are lucky that it didn’t evolve into something worse
I doubt it's high.
Some people hold weight differently. Zion has broad shoulders, a broad waist, and thick arms: if you got him down to 230 or something, he'd look weird.
Was he 285 when he first got weighed for Duke? Probably. Was he 285lbs by the end of his time at Duke? Not a chance. He visibly slimmed down throughout the year as he played, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was walking around more like 265 by March. Of course, he put some weight back on during the Summer, but he already looks to have dropped a lot of it. The only people who really know are the medical staff and training staff who will be monitoring this stuff directly, and we've got to just trust them. Aaron Nelson is good at his job: if Zion is 280 and needs to lose 20lbs, Nelson will know that. If he's actually 260 and he thinks that's sustainable and reasonable for someone with Zion's build, then he'll know that too.
I just hope this isn't the start of something. With his weight and him not knowing how to go anything less than 100 mph has me concerned that this could happen again this season.
When AD left and we were getting Zion, this should have been the start of something new. Yet, this is only a continuation.
no. They are trying to get him in to game shape via playing real game minutes. People need to stop freaking out over this, embiid didnt play for 2 years and everyone was calling him done. Let’s not over react to knee soreness.
If Zion is going to play 82+ games he has to be able to play a preseason and I don’t think 10lbs is going to make a significant difference in the wear and tear on his knees. Lebron with the Heat was playing at the same weight he is now. Not saying he couldn’t benefit and prolong his career by cutting a little. But if he’s injury prone he’s injury prone and there isn’t a ton anyone can do about that.trainers and medical staff aren’t going to magically fix genetics.
The chicken littles are out in full force with this one. Every time Zion has the usual NBA player injury, they won't shut up.
In other news Gentry said Redick will start tonight. So someone else in the starting lineup either not playing or coming off the bench. Ingram?
This organization wouldn't know transparency if it came and slapped them in the face. I thought we left that with the last regime.
I don't recall 350 lb running power dunking Shaq having constant injury problems until he was 30+.
Explained perfectly

It be nice if we can get a consistent time table for people that bought tickets, hotels, and airplane trips to see Zion. I guess they don't want to tank ticket prices or nationally televised games a week before the season.
Or this is a massive troll job by Griffin.
Fake News?
Lonzo Ball Denies Hiding Secret Ankle Injury, Despite BBB Cofounder Claims https://t.co/eKJBwHLgwj

It make some sense. It took him like 4-6 months to get back on the court. LA block Lonzo getting surgery as public knowledge. They deemed it unnecessary and it would heal up with therapy.
From all accounts, it seem pretty open and shut cases. Pelicans had to knew about it.
Here’s the latest on the knee injury that’s gonna keep Zion Williamson out for the first few weeks of the season, including some good news from Coach Alvin Gentry. pic.twitter.com/rFX7UwUxAH

In the above video, I mostly agree with Paul Pierce (weird to say that) in that yeah, it's nothing to worry about, but it is a bit of a let down. Can't deny that seeing Zion open the year against the Raptors was something I was looking forward to, and while Amin is right that there are plenty of other things to be excited about this season, it still sucks for Zion to miss the season opener and the home opener.
Long time lurker.. I just registered because this has me really concerned.
I have a really bad feeling that Zion is going to be one of those players that just seems to never be healthy. Being that it is an issue with the knee is not good. We have seen this with a lot of college players before. The stress on the knees of an 82 game schedule, especially someone with that weight at that height is never good. I hope I am wrong. But this just seems so familiar with what I have seen before in those players who have chronic knee injuries and never really enjoy a solid, healthy NBA career.
Obviously anything is possible, and I understand why you're concerned (everyone probably is at least a little, since they haven't told us exactly what the issue is) but I feel like this is panicking a bit too early.
This is Zion's first real injury. Through high school, college, till now. Yes, there was the exploding shoe incident, but that's not an injury in the sense of his body failing, that was a shoe issue. This is the first time he's ever had a real injury, caused by a mechanical issue on his body. I don't think it's fair to start filing him in with T Mac and Yao Ming as players who could just never get healthy because of that. Players get injured sometimes, and if it's not severe, it's not severe.
This is part of why I wish they had actually just told us what it was - knee sprain, bone bruise, whatever - so that we could know it was just a minor thing and ignore it, rather than letting imaginations run wild. It's not your fault that you're worrying, of course not, but they really should know that refusing to release details just lets it fester.
Is this really an "injury" or did he just bangs knees with someone and bruised himself? Big difference in my eyes.
That's the thing. We don't know. Nobody knows. All we know is that according to Woj, it's not severe, everyone expects him to be fine, and that Gentry found it minor enough to joke about when asked. Could be a sprain, a bone bruise, just general soreness, minor strain. Nobody can say.
TNT's Kristen Ledlow on Zion Williamson injury: "I was told by the Pelicans staff that the severity of his injury is not yet known. He will be re-evaluated this weekend in New Orleans but HE HASN'T BEEN RULED OUT BEYOND TONIGHT'S GAME."
— Oleh Kosel (@OlehKosel) October 19, 2019
Woj: ''It's not severe, no one is worried, but he'll miss a few weeks.''
Ledlow: ''No one knows if it's severe, but he could be fine for opening night.''
WHO TO BELIEVE?!?!?!
I heard (just a rumour) that it's both an MCL sprain and meniscus problem. That pels are going to reevaluate him in 2 weeks . If theres still pain then theyre going to operate on the meniscus and who knows how long that can take to recover. If he feels okay (and they believe that he will) then they will let him play through it and maybe operate later in his career, because apparently you can play through these issues. They believe that the MCL sprain is whats keeping him out.. this is just a rumor however, probably wrong
A ploy to tamp-down expectations...or to ramp up the hype for next Friday night? Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Griff is a master.
Yeah, I don't believe this at all.
Woj says it's not severe, Ledlow says he's not even ruled out past tonight, but apparently he's got an MCL sprain and a meniscus issue. Woj says everyone expects a full recovery, Ledlow says he's getting re-evaluated this weekend, but apparently he's not getting re-evaluated for 2 weeks. It's not severe, but meniscus surgery is on the table, but they're putting it off.
Sounds like a rumour to me, and a pretty confused one at that.
Even during the game they're saying weeks may have been a stretch for precautionary reasons.
Not severe and we don’t know how long at least a few weeks don’t belong in the same sentence. They wouldn’t let anyone take pictures of him leaving the facility and now have clearly been instructed to be ambiguous about it so they can continue to sell tickets. This is horrible horrible news. I can feel it. We are screwed at PF and now Gentry is actually seriously considering this small ball bs so JJ doesn’t complain. He’s going to get Ingram killed. Just start Kenny Hustle and take the losses. I’ll be back in a week to admit we should have taken Morant..
