A monkey with a typewriter could do a better job than Jimmy Smith. Negativity sells and Jimmy knows that. Any words I would use to describe my feelings on him would get censored out
This article was spot on. I don't care if y'all hate him or not but everything that he said was true.
Do you really think the Suns got better? He just listed what they gained and didn't even mention what they lost? We will finish ahead of the Suns. We were never going to finish ahead of the Thunder without sacrificing the future; and even if we did that we probably still wouldn't have beat the Thunder.
LOL at Smith. The Suns lost more than they brought in. But it was "EXCITING."
NBA sportswriting in New Orleans, ladies and gentlemen.
As far as the Pels go, no, the Cole deal doesn't move the needle, but I'd prefer they not make a trade for a desperate flail at job-saving.
Also:
"Two No. 1 draft picks to the Philadelphia 76ers for Holiday was exorbitant, whether or not Holiday has been entirely healthy during his time in New Orleans.
And don't get caught up in the "who would you have drafted" narrative had the Pelicans dealt only one first-round pick for Holiday.
Draft picks, especially first-rounders, are potential chips in the NBA poker game, changing hands in trades, sweetening possible trades that could help improve a team immediately."
So, they're trade chips, but LOL at the Pelicans for using them as trade chips cause now they can't use them as trade chips. Gotcha.
The problem isn't the facts from yesterday, the problem is the expectations. OKC and Phoenix weren't able to make a bunch of exciting moves yesterday because they have a better GM, they were able to make a bunch of moves because they are at different places in their franchise building. They both started out the season with more assets than the Pelicans, 8+ real NBA players and draft picks. The Pelicans started this season with 6 real NBA players and no draft picks. Between player retention, turning Rivers into Pondexter and having the MLE to pick up another legit NBA player, the Pelicans should start next season with many more assets, at least 8 real NBA players and their draft picks.
It's like knocking a guy who went to the casino with $50 for not making as much money as a guy who went with a bankroll of $5000
Its just stupid IMO
Very well said. The thing I was shaking my head at most from the article was the thought process that we should have expected the Pelicans to be making a lot of moves yesterday. This is not our year to contend. Would it be great to make the playoffs so our young guys can get the experience of playing in the post season? Of course it would. Should we have gone out yesterday and done everything possible to make sure we make the playoffs this year? That would be stupid and short-sighted.
Phoenix did what they had to, because Dragic flat out told them he wouldn't re-sign. I don't see them as having gotten better yesterday, they simply got some value for Dragic rather than nothing. That was a smart move by them.
Perhaps Oklahoma City did get a lot better yesterday. So what? We're not ready to compete with OKC anyway. The thought that we would finish ahead of them by the end of the year was a pipe dream anyway, unless KD were to get hurt again.
I won't argue that a lot of our past big moves have not been the best. However, we can only work with where we are right now. I thought our move yesterday was a no-brainer. I'm looking forward to seeing what we do when Gordon's contract comes off the books. That's when I think we actually need to start making bigger moves to get better.
I wasn't expecting much at the trade deadline. We are close to a playoff spot so you can't make whole sale changes just in case you can get into the playoffs and that's mostly because it would mess with team chemistry but once your in the playoffs anything can happen.
I think Dell has done a wonderful job and I'd expect a nice move this summer and then again next summer especially if we keep Gordon through all of next year. Hopefully we get our 3rd player to build off of this summer and maybe a good to great 4th player next summer.
I think our overall team quality is up from when we drafted Davis, so as long as I see growth in both players and coaching, I'll be happy.
You guys really are fooling yourselves. Demps has been here five years and the only good player he has acquired is Anthony Davis and thats only because he got lucky in the draft lotto
I just hate that a pelicans sports writer can trash the team so bad. I read the article on bleacher report, and it pissed me off how he was so pessimistic.

Jimmy smith is the basketball equivalent of Sean Hannity (or Rachel Maddow)
And you guys (you know the ones I mean) are like the college freshman I went to school with, nodding furiously and scribbling talking points down to regurgitate at parties.
If we had gone Slow Build and kept the picks instead of Young Vets, we'd be in Utah's situation right now, lots of young talent. What did Utah do yesterday? They traded one of their failed/poor fitting recent picks for a new pick to try their luck in the draft again.
If you have a problem with specific Demps moves or even the collection of Demps' moves, there's nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is expecting this team to be any better than challenging for the 8 seed, which seems to be the expectation of everybody that is upset about our inability to keep up with the Presties.
Not sure why this is directed at me and really has nothing to do with what I pointed out.
What's wrong with Utah? Other than the fact they keep veterans like Millsap, Al Jefferson, Williams, and Richard Jefferson too long. Getting great rarely happens over night it's usually a slow processes with ups and downs. Even if you count Kanter as a miss they have a lot to be more players to go before calling what they did a failure.
I guess it's no fun having 5 or 6 solid pieces that you don't want to lose for the sake of "changing things up." I suppose we should've drafted some lesser quality players instead of making the trades we did. That way, we'd have soooo much fun at the deadline!!! Imagine the excitement if we would've drafted Drummond and used him as trade bait, because no GM in their right mind would trade AD.
People are upset that we didn't trade our way into the playoffs yesterday. Being Utah would put us further away from the playoffs.Quote:

I'm not saying Utah is a failed team, they just are much further away from the playoffs than the Pelicans, and the reason most people are mad about yesterday is because they feel the 2 teams we were fighting with for the 8 seed were able to push away from us.Quote:

There's nothing inherently wrong with slow build, there's nothing inherently wrong with the young vet strategy. But if you wanted the team to build slowly, you can't point to every misstep in the young vet build as justification of going the other direction. There surely would have been missteps in the slow build, exhibit A, Austin Rivers. And there was no misstep yesterday, we turned useless assets into potentially useful assets.
