Burke "I"m hearing between #2 and #6"

Burke isn't bigger than CP3. They both are 5'11.75" without shoes. Burke wearing thicker shoes to the combine doesn't make him bigger than Chris Paul. He does, however, have a larger wingspan at 6'5.5" to CP3's 6'4.25", which is probably more important than height though.

I'd rather not take Burke though. PGs are a dime a dozen right now. And I don't think Burke will be nearly as special as some are hyping him to be on this board. I think his ceiling is Mike Conley, not Chris Paul... and even then, he's not close to the athlete that Conley is. I'm really not sure he's a good enough athlete to be a good defender in this league, let alone a good enough offensive player to warrant taking #6 overall. I'd still rather take Zeller there assuming Porter, McLemore, and Oladipo are gone.

In response to this, I did a modicum of research. Found this out:

Trey Burke. 187lbs.

Chris Paul. 178lbs.

Hell, one place I've seen listed Burke at 190lbs. Not only is Burke bigger than Paul, he's a good deal bigger. Hell, that actually just gave me even more confidence in Burke's transition to the pros. Remember how in his rookie year one of his weaknesses was how small he was and he had to bulk up?

I had no idea Burke was that built.

Also, I can't really buy a word you are talking about when it comes to him not being a good enough offensive player. I mean, what are you basing that on? It certainly isn't his actual ability to shoot. Dude shots over 40% almost everywhere on the field, can score off the dribble as well as he scores off catch and shoots, can hit from anywhere. At any time.

Kyler simply doesn't like him and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I was stunned when his "mock draft" had Burke falling to 13. Whether he likes him or not, that is just crazy.

Yes being predicted in the top 10 is certainly comparable to being dismissed as Aaron Craft.

I love to watch Burke but I feel like he's also a product of the hype machine a bit as well: I think 7-15 is about where he "should" go. I'm in no way saying this is his fault.

I don't understand the hate, have you guys seen his NBA draft video?

While I don't think it's fair to say he's going to be better than or even as good as Chris Paul the comparison based of off physical size and athletic testing are close. As much as people will go crazy he's a better player leaving college than Chris Paul. The numbers don't lie. Again being a better college player doesn't mean he'll be a better pro. As much of a Burke fan that I am I wouldn't bet that he gets on CP3's level however I've seen nothing about his game that says he can't.

Based on what Monty said about River's being our PG.
I have a strange feeling we will go C or SG if Porter is gone (which is 90% likely).

If we do however draft Burke.......GOD help the poor guy if he doesn't live up to the CP3 hype.

I think the other thing that gets lost with Burke is just how much he carried that team all year(very similar to Chris Paul). Nobody on that team could create their own shot efficiently or consistently besides him. Yet they were in the title game and a bad call away from potentially winning that game. Despite him getting into early foul trouble.

No one is saying he's gonna be Chris Paul. No one is Chris Paul. He's just very similar in stature and that naturally brings out comparisons.

As far as a meltdown if he isn't there, nah not at all. Want him here but won't cry if he doesn't make it to 6, we'll get talent in one way or another. Now if we pass on him you might see me be pretty irritable for a while...

Yes. He certainly carried a team with what? 4 nba players on it... Lets not act like he was on some talentless team like I feel you're trying to paint it. Was he the conduit? Certainly.

That's who most people are comparing him to. It's not fair. He will always be a disappointment if pels fans keep making the comparison is what I'm saying.

This has nothing to do with me being an avid Rivers supporter, but my bold statement is this:

The Pelicans will not select Trey Burke (if available) solely because of Austin Rivers. The more I really analyze it, I think we may take Zeller or Bazz.

Still doesn't change the fact that none of them could consistently create a shot outside of Burke and good ball movement. I think Burke (like any elite PG should do) made those dudes look better than they were. He made the game easy for them while still getting his. That's what you want from the position. He didn't have a legit post option nor another play maker. All he had was bigs with good hands (and feet with McGray) , athletes that could finish and spot up shooters. Basically he had a bunch of role players albeit raw NBA level role players.

The similarities are deeper than just stature it's play style more than anything else. They play the position almost the same way meaning the almost all same strength along with almost all of the same weakness leaving college.

On this team, he doesn't even need to be Chris Paul. A Mike Conley comparison got made. That'd work out just fine. Hell. Give him Conley's defense coupled with that offense and that's a damn good PG.

Trey Burke is going to be drafted way ahead of our selection (#6) unless we trade up for him.

Oh you mean like Chris Paul. Because he didn't play any D outside of playing the passing lane leaving Wake Forest. It's not a matter of wanting to play D it's a matter of consistency. Some speculate that has heavy work load lead to his lack of defensives consistency.

That's what I was thinking. There is no way we draft Burke. He doesn't fit what we're looking for. After watching his workout video and the DraftExpress video (in addition to the college games), I just can't think of a scenario in which we take him.

I don't think he's a bad player or will be. I see him as a lesser version of Damian Lillard, both offensively and defensively (which isn't good). Again, that just isn't what this team is about, and we won't take him.

You're the main culprit with the Chris paul comparisons. I just read your last like 8 post and it' all comparing Burke to him. You can't say "who is" then compare them a ton of times.

We already have a point that lets other guards get where they want in the paint. I don't see Monty drafting another.

Another thing I notice with Burke is that he rarely seems to just blow by defenders. He beats people with his hesitation dribble but doesn't seem to leave them in the dust. That defender is always still really close to him. That worked in college, will it work in the pros?

I'm not a complete Burke hater or anything. I actually like him a lot as a player. I just agree with jsl that he doesn't fit what we seem to be looking for. He doesn't scream "Monty type player" to me. Take that for what it is. Not arguing, just stating.

Rivers wasn't a great defender leaving Duke and his lane agility and 3/4 sprint times are well below Burke's.

People Demps traded for Grevis Vasquez and for Quincy Pondexter at that. Is GV a Demps/Williams type of defender?

I don't see Burke being that much of an improvement over Greivis

I like Trey Burke, but I completely agree with you.

People continue to overlook just how much the team has invested in Rivers to become our future 1.

With that vision in mind, snagging a 7-footer to pair next to Davis (Zeller, Len) or a complimentary scorer to Gordon (Bazz) seems to be the most plausible approach.

First things first. Before the lockout-shortened season, we had no one on the team. There were barely any players and we needed spots filled. We did, however, have Ariza, Aminu, and Pondexter at the 3 and couldn't keep them all. So we traded Q-Pon for whatever we could get. We got Vasquez.

Based on Monty's interviews, we don't want another Vasquez or even GV himself. He said something along the lines of "Yea, we have guys that might get 20 and 10 but give up 35 and 15. We can't have that."

Can't wait for the 6th Pick Tourney on BSS. It's gonna be really interesting.

i still have a feeling that porter oladipo or mclemore fall to us at 6 and we take them, i still have a ton of faith in rivers, a ton, he was a kid last year, after an entire off season of training i really think we see something special in him this year. rivers gordon porter ryno davis, id love that. id even throw a max at jennings, in that case in 3 years if jennings works out, then great, if not rivers will be 23 and more than ready to take over.

What do we have invested in Rivers. A 10th pick? We've done nothing to the roster to adjust to Rivers being on this team. They want to make Rivers the starter, but as far as having invested anything it hasn't been much.

So you take the BPA in trade, but not while drafting? Whether Demps view Burke as the BPA if/when he's there at 6 is a different issue. However if he is Dell's BPA you guys think he won't be drafted because of we have Austin Rivers or his inconsistency on defense? When he already draft Rivers last year despite having some defensive issues leaving Duke and trading for Vasquez who is a defensive liability.

Again nobody knows what Demps is going to do but, based on recent history if he has Burke top 6 on his board he'll take him at 6.

Drafting Rivers at the 10 spot is not a big investment especially him barely playing the point last season. Also he wasn't drafted to play the point. He was drafted because of his ability to create his own shot.

I think we can argue as fans that we have no idea how much they have invested in Rivers. Could be a lot or could be a little. Only people that know that are people like Dell and Monty.

I assumed if we got Burke GV would be moved either via trade or to another position(SG,SF). That's IF the Rivers PG experiment works out (which i think it will).
Burke and Rivers can co-exist imo.
