Overall Thoughts on Anthony Davis' First Year?

This is DeAndre Jordan workout. Dribbling during a workout is completely different than doing so in game. I used to watch Hilton Armstrong dribble before the game, but once the game started he couldn't do anything.

If Davis develops that part of his game I'll be thrilled to be wrong. I'm a fan of all things New Orleans first and foremost. However I just don't see it and haven't seen anything thus far to change my mind.

What would it take for him to convince you that his ball handling was better ? A crossover or something ?

Which he has done before. He's also brought the ball up the floor spun around a defender and set up a 3 pointer in a game. That's when I started to believe he had handles. I've seen bigs totally blow dribbling the ball, and Davis is at least average right now(for bigs)

Are you trying to prove the point that Davis has good handles is right with that video. Those handles are shocking, so high and loose, doing it at pretty much walking pace and still fumbling. Those are downright rubbish, ADs are at least low, powerful and at speed in that previous video.

Only way Davis will impress me is if Davis puts on a Chris Owens Easter bonnet that covers his eyes, balances 2 easter eggs on his shoulders as he dribbles up and down the baseline while humming "Here comes peter cottontail". Until then, he's the biggest bust since Dolly Parton

Not to mention that AD is using two balls to dribble with, which shows he has good control.

When the season ends, dig into the numbers. I was surprised when I did.

Stop it with the dribbling crap. The guy was a point guard two years ago, he can dribble extremely well for his position.

Maybe I haven't watched his dribbling closely enough but I didn't see any problem with his handle, especially compared to other bugs in the league. No big men in the league have handles like a guard, AD is no different, all he needs to have is good ball security, quality footwork, and the ability maintain his dribble while driving and backing down a defender, other than that what does he need to do in regards to his dribbling?

This is not good dribbling, he constantly losing control, looking down, and moving slow.

When the hell is Davis ever going to need to show off his ability to break defenders off the dribble anyway? Charity games?

He can do both. As for now, in a season where we're aiming for a lottery pick, you won't find me complaining about him developing his jumper.

You'll probably see it a lot more next season. His Jumpshot will become more and more reliable each day and teams will end up playing him much tighter which will give him a lot of opportunities to dribble penetrate. Teams are only recently starting to respect his jump shot.

I expected Davis to be much more raw, that said I'm still disappointed. while his touch around the basket, jumper, and bball IQ on the offensive end is impressive. I expected to see him be able to show more signs of getting his own shot. I also expected him to be a much better defensive presence and show signs of being able to play the 5 spot defensively. We are way worse on defense then I thought we'd be. I was basically expecting him to be like Larry Sanders this season with a better shot and freethrow percentage and a lower rebound rate do to his lack of strength. I still think he'll be a top 15 player in the league by his third season though.

Both did it regularly in their prime. Not anywhere near as much as of late but it was definitely in their arsenal in back when their athleticism was at their peak.

Definitely. He is building an arsenal of weapons. How do you build an arsenal? One weapon at a time. I think he will be able to use dribble penetration and his jump shot to take advantage of defenders in most situations.

Very much agree. He's gonna start really messing with guys with a nice 15 footer pump fake. If the 3 or 4 is matched up with him and bites on that, you think the 1 or 2 is going to bother getting posterized if the 5 didn't rotate? :hihi:

I was surpised with his game. I expected him to be a great defender but I didn't know he had a great deal of potenial on the offensive end.
However, I don't understand why people would chose Lillard over AD for rookie of the year.
Offseason: I think this offseason AD gets to his playing weight of 240-245 lbs.
Expectation for 13-14 season - statline: 18.4 pts - 9. 6 rbs - 2.3 blks

Probably because he puts up points (people love points), hasn't missed any time, and plays a ton of minutes. Just my guess as to why they'd give it to Lillard.

I think in the thread a long time ago I predicted a 14/7 year from him. Pretty much on track.

Lillard won't get much better. AD should be getting more consideration instead of it being a runaway ballot.

Lillard's stats seem average PG especially playing for 35+ mins a game.

I don't think AD will put on 20 lbs. in one offseason. He needs to work up to that weight.

No need to put down Lillard. He is a fine PG, especially when it comes to shooting/scoring. The only thing to really criticize him about is his defense. Even Greivis may be a more effective defender than him.

I'm no physical therapist but if he put a quick 30 lbs on I think it might increase the risk of a knee injury. 82 games is a lot of wear and tear so I always feel athletes try to do too much coming into the league.

Heh I guess you can call me a worrier. Every game I hope nothing serious happens to AD knees because we see it ruin a lot of promising careers.

Some people on here want him to be over 255+ by start of next season. To me that's quick and pushing it, but they don't have to take it from me. He'll be lucky to be steady at 235 by next season unless he puts on serious muscle.

Yeah I think 235 is fair, anything over that is a bonus. 240 and I would be ecstatic.

Several things:

1) I think when he said "dig into the numbers. I was surprised when I did," I think he means he was pleasantly surprised with how well Davis was performing. I did several pieces comparing Davis' advanced metrics to guys like Howard and Garnett in their rookie years, and he trumped them both in almost every single category.

2) 42 has a unique posting style that you don't really get unless you know him personally or unless you just read his stuff enough to understand what he is getting at. I am going to assume that you don't know him well, so you probably see it as condescending tone, but he's really just a goof ball. That's his style, and he's harmless (mostly).

3) 42 is also a professor, so he has that natural way about him of, "hey, I'm not going to just give you the answer. If you learn how to look it up, you'll be better off for it." Now, perhaps he could have provided you a link or something, but he isn't trying to be a jerk. That's just who he is.

Thank you very much, and I would assume then that it's because I don't know how to take him because I have seen quite a few times were I think "jerk" as you put it. But ok, I appologize.

Back on point, I am also very excited and pleased with how he is doing. The only thing I think has to be taken with those numbers at first glance for some perspective (haven't read full reading yet) is that both of those guys were straight out of highschool and there were better big men in the league at that time. But I 100% agree, he is developing very very well.

Like I said, you fancy yourself a philosopher and apparently you are a professor, but let's be simple about it, you like to say things in a short, condescending and 'matter-of-fact' manner. It's not an assumption, I asked you what you meant and you chose to again be short and condescending instead of clarifying or answering. I don't see why, if you don't like that way he post, just skip over it instead of insulting unless you were interested in some sort of a reconciliation? First, I don’t think you are superior. I think you feel you are based on the manner in which you post.

Second, there is no such thing as ‘kind of opposite,’ but even so, matter-of-fact would be kind of opposite being circuitous. Matter-of-fact is short and, in an environment of discussion, it is rude and/or condescending.

Third, when I said “meaning??” it means what was your intended indication (?), as is the definition of ‘meaning.’

If you are so intent and focused on discussing the team I'm not sure why a person asking the meaing of your comment about stats and a conclusion based on those stats (which contains neither a stat or a conclusion) is met with "I thought it was pretty clear" instead of discussion about what you meant or found.
