We wouldn't be using cap space. That's the point. We would send out equal salaries for Asik (not using cap space). We would keep our holds for our FAs, pushing us over the cap and giving us the MLE.
I think.

Your 3 way trade might work. The only other way we can keep the MLE is if we wind up with an $8.3 million trade exception. Basically trade one of our $10+ million players and don't take much back. Outside of that you either have to create cap space (using Ryno to dump Gordon?) or be satisfied with the $2.7 million cap room exception and minimum contracts.
I think Dell has to look at that. The question is - do you shed a bunch of the smaller salaries like that and just kill your depth, going with a top heavy roster? Or do you move one of the big 5 pieces and keep the guys on really cheap contracts, giving you more depth but perhaps one less piece of top heavy talent.
I think Dell has to explore every avenue to move Gordon, which is slightly harder this morning because they can't attach a 1st round pick to him. Then, you have the debate about Rivers and other cheap talent vs. Ryno.
To me, it comes down to how you feel about Babbitt. Can he give you 70-75% of what Ryno did at 1/9th the price? If he does, should I move Anderson instead?
I just hope it is Gordon. Would make this a perfect week IMO
Yeah. I guess I feel like Demps gets guys like Babbitt, Ajinca, and Withey in his sleep. Ryno is harder to replace and if my choices are get rid of Babbitt/Ajinca/Withey for SF (Tucker) or get rid of Ryno for SF, I choose the former every time.
I would love to get rid of Gordon. If Dell does trade Ryno for SF and a first, do you see us packaging Gordon with that first? Then going after a huge fish at SF? And again, is Deng (or whomever, or even a collection of smaller guys) better than Ryno, Gordon, and Tucker?

Sam Amick: Rockets deal likely happens after July moratorium (10th) because NO will likely use players w/ nonguaranteed $ to match Asik's $8.3 million Twitter @sam_amick

What bothers me most about analysts of today is their inability to think outside the box. They simply say, "Pelicans need their 1st round pick!" then go on about why every first round pick is so valuable.
"First-round picks are valuable assets because they offer up to four years of cost-controlled production at rates that are, on average, far below market value. By contrast, the players New Orleans has acquired (Jrue Holiday last year, now Asik) are paid what they're worth, relatively."
Well the thing they aren't understanding is that for the next 1.5 years we have the MOST valuable contract in the league in Anthony Davis. If we wait to sign these big names, his mega-extension will eat a huge chunk of our cap space. These writers have got to see this kind of stuff...
probably posted not going through 15 pages but..

Report: Omer Asik being dealt to Pelicans
Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Rockets are set to deal C Omer Asik to the Pelicans for a future first-round draft pick and $1.5 million.
This should be about a done deal and it's a big move for the Pelicans, who had a lot of injury and depth problems at center last season. Look for Asik to start alongside Anthony Davis next season, and look for his fantasy value to take a nice jump now that he no longer has to deal with Dwight Howard. As for the Rockets, they're clearly making monetary space in hopes of acquiring LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony. Additionally, Michael McNamara is reporting that the Pelicans have to trade Austin Rivers or Eric Gordon in order to take on Asik, so there's likely more to come in this deal after the draft.
It's amazing what kids retain. When my 6yr old son came down the stairs (dazed from just having woken up) this morning, i told him the Pels just landed Omar Asik. Without hesitation he said, "Is that #3 that does that awkward face expression before all his free throws?"
why, yes... yes he is that guy
It's a freakin epidemic.
Both Mannix and Amick are reasonably respected NBA writers. I understand the national guys being clueless about specific situations of the less popular teams, but this is a pretty well established rule.Quote:

Still trying to figure out pick situation. Not sure how Pelicans--which does not have a pick in this draft--can give up a '15 first rounder
Could we possibly have a draft night trade lined up that sorts out all of this mess AND nets us a pick?
That would be great if we can get rid of Gordon for a 1st round pick!
Gordon is the ideal. Stretching Gordon might be 2nd best scenario. There is no debate there.
The debate comes down to Ryno route vs. Rivers route. Ryno route gives you very little flexibility to add depth to roster and even a starting SF. Rivers route forces you to lose Ryno but gives you ability to make roster super deep and even tackle 2015 FA class super hard.
Its a good debate. I am starting to lean towards trading Ryno. Makes more sense for big picture. I just would ideally like for him to go East. I don't want him draining 8 threes on me 3-4 times a year and/or in the playoffs
Calling it now, Jason Smith returns on one year deal after Ryno traded.
