It is useful when trying to get an idea of how productive a player generally is using box-score stats. Typically, good offensive players that play similar minutes end up with a high PER. If you have a low PER, you are not an effective offensive threat. If you have a high PER while playing a significant number of minutes, you are probably a fine offensive player.
Using it as anything more than that would be a mistake, imo.
darius miller is an assassin, hope he gets a lot of practice this offseason and gets way more minutes next year
also guys jennings is just 23, cut him some slack

PER does take into account blocks and steals, but eh. Nothing even close to a useful measure of defense.
The most effective way to measure defense for a player with the stats available to the public is to analyze all the lineups the player played in and against and see how they did versus other lineups tried with and against those same lineups. And even then, you can only (partially) determine the impact of a single player on a single team. Can't really do it to compare players on other teams against each other.
Someone with lots of blocks and steals is probably a good defensive player, but they could still be bad since they gamble a lot. Someone with few blocks and steals is probably a poor defensive player, but could still be a good one if they force their opponent into taking poor shots and making poor passes.
Defensive stats are a crapshoot.
He's an average point, IMO. Just like everyone this board is trying to trade GV for. He would probably be a better fit for this team than Jennings or Greivis, though. He resorts to hero ball less often and is a fine defender while still being someone you have to guard on offense.
i think stats overall are dumb, u have to evaluate a player by who's around him and what he does by watching him honestly, I trust demps to make the right choices.
Statistics together aren't dumb, it's just each different types of statistics tells a different story. The eye test is very important, but statistics are suppose to back up what you see. If you can't, people call it potential.
There's no overall rating stat. You need to use stats and learn to interpret them to get the answer.
If you really know what you're watching most of the time the advanced stats back up what your eyes see.
