I wouldn't mind a back court of Jackson and Morrow to come off the bench. IF Rivers gets traded (which I hope he doesn't). Please no more Roberts!

I bet Dell had learned his lesson. If a restricted free agent( i.e. Gordon) tells you not to match a contract, then you don't do it. I hate to beat a dead horse but that max contract is really hampering some moves we could make.

can someone give me a breif recap of the entire deal? What protection on the pick? and is the rumor we are sending a player and getting a SF back?
Asik for a 2015 first. There is no conformation what the protections are. Rumored to be 1-3 and 20-30 protected.
As MM has pointed out, one of the core 5 or Rivers has to be moved to fit Asik. There's rumors about deals but obviously Dell is listening to all options first to see what is the best he can do.
I'm really finding it hard to be optimistic about this trade. I just don't think this team has a shot at playoff contention, giving previous history and coaching.
Someone please try to talk me into it.
Why are you not optimistic?
Davis/Asik /Anderson is arguably the best 3 big rotation in the league. Holiday/Evans are a very strong backcourt. They have depth pieces with rivers/roberts/ajinca/withey and jackson stashed. They only need to get rid of gordon and get a decent SF.
This is why I think Dell is a genius if he pulls this off the way it's been rumored he's pursuing it.
Option 2 is clearly the better option and gives you a roster that is constructed to compete with Phoenix, Dallas, Memphis, and Portland for a playoff spot. The playoffs just showed us how important having depth is, if only to make sure guys have fresh legs entering the 2nd season.
If Player X is who he was last year, the Pelicans will not have a single hole in the starting 5. And option 2 gives us depth and a couple of those rookie contracts that ESPN folks seem to think are the most valuable assets a team can have.
The part of this that is even more exciting is what could happen with Gordon. IMO, there are 3 options:
1. Gordon sucks, pouts, and/or is injured a lot next season
2. Gordon stays healthy and guns for 6th Man of the Year making our bench very very good.
3. Gordon is traded for some other asset(s) that we can't predict but contributes to our depth. Something like Gordon to Chicago for Boozer/Snell (or Dunleavy). Or Gordon to Charlotte for MKG. Or Gordon to Nuggets for Gallo.
It seems really reasonable to think this team could be setting up for a bigger year than anyone in the national media will predict.
The @PelicansNBA trade to bring Omer Asik to Nola is 95% done deal. A few remaining details should be sorted through by end of today.

Our biggeset issues have been injuries, rebounding, and defense. Our offense was actually pretty strong.
SO, this trade helps us with the one thing we can actually control. Asik is a top 5 defensive center and rebounds the hell out of the ball. He will mesh into Monty's highly mobile defense, while not taking any shots from our core players. He is servicable on offense as well.
Ultimately this allows us to get him involved in our system a year early as opposed to signing him next year. It could also serve to convince him that this is a long term solution where he can both win, and receive PT
That last part is what bothers me. We still have a hole in SF. We have to get rid of some depth to take back Asik. And we can blame injuries all we want for last season, but the West is incredibly tough. I personally feel that you don't trade draft picks until you're confident you can make the playoffs consistently.
If you can convince me that there would be somebody between 4-20 in next years draft that would help us more in the future than Asik does now I will concede this argument.
I like the move the Pelicans made. All we need now is a decent SF.

One thing I don't like is all the negativity about this trade . We get a top center with elite defensive skill set that will help AD out as a player and keep him from taking a beating defending the basket because we have no one else to do it . Asik guarantees this and draft pick in the first round doesn't guarantee anything . See Oden , Bennett and countless others . We got an elite defensive center in his prime I think everybody should be happy and stop thinking were missing out on the next Lebron next year .
Obviously, we were supposed to get a player with Asik's skill set to spiral into existence out of the ether, while only giving away 3 pounds of lint and the shattered remains of my respect for Microsoft...
If I have to pick someone to get rid of, it's for sure rivers.
Also look at what afflalo went for. He's a much better player and I still think he could have fit with us as a 3
Is the Austin Rivers national speculation based off MM's tweets about rivers and Gordon needing to be moved? Or has there been newer info released?
I haven't seen anything Rivers related that wasn't just speculation. But it's the obvious move to make if you can find a taker. No one is going to take Gordon which means you have to choose between trading Ryan Anderson or Austin Rivers, Ely, Miller, and Babbit. You choose keeping Anderson every time unless a team wants to over pay you for him.
The only thing other than Mm's speculation was a tweet or two last night from some media guys saying the Pels were trying to move Rivers for cap.
I met him just a awesome guy he is starting caliber center He worked hard to get those starter minutes so he deserves this.Omer's an elite rebounder and a great defender in the post and on the PnR. Very smart and rugged. And is much better than advertised on offense.he is a true warrior plays with all his heart and soul.the best move for this year.you guys should celebrate this news

More dominos will fall in Asik-to-Pelicans deal. N.O. may move Austin Rivers to create cap space. One option: dad Doc owns trade exception

I would love for Doc and Austin to work together. At least then people couldn't say the coach wasn't giving him opportunities.
I don't want Rivers to go :(
All I'm saying is that these guys are speculating that he could be moved and clippers could be an option. I haven't heard anything official saying that they are actively shopping him is all I'm getting at. I mean we could me tyreke, Jrue, Ryno, Gordon, or any of the other guys too to clear up cap. Again, me saying that we could move them to free space isn't wrong. Highly unlikely? Yes. All I was asking was if any reports said definitely that he's actively being shopped and pushed to be moved.
No need to be a jerk and condescending about it. Jeez. Glad I'm getting the negative press because people here think I'm that quail man ****** on tiger droppings. Sorry folks, different guy.
Just saying, if there was an official trade I am sure this forum would have a post for that.
I dont know what makes reports more speculation and more fact in your mind. All I can tell you is that one of those six contracts has to be moved. Process of elimination probably narrows that down to Ryno and Rivers since Gordon is virtually unmoveable.
Dell Demps turned five first round picks
2012 - NOP
2012 - MIN
2013 - NOP
2014 - NOP
2015 - NOP
Into one franchise cornerstone (Davis), two quality starters (Holiday, Asik), and one quality rotation player (Rivers). So he's batting .800 in the first round. How many NBA GM's kill for that?
"I've heard rumors from team sources" vs. "I've surmised because I looked at the salary cap situation". If the Phoenix rumor hadn't come from a source with a track record but instead you saying you've done the math and this is the optimal trade, it would get weighed differently. That's no slight on your powers of deduction, but there is a difference between a reliable source saying "I see smoke" and a smart source saying "this is where my best calculations say the fire should be." Both should be taken seriously, but if you have a credible report of smoke...Quote:

Guys, it's not that easy. Add up the $$$ you're spending and then do the comparisons. It's not a matter of just looking at the players.
With these players we've yet to play in a single playoff game. We have to see something from these guys as a group before we say that Demps has done a great job. This team needs to be at least in the 2nd round of the playoffs in the next few years. If not, this is a screw-up.
I guess - but trades rely on two parties. So even if we are trying something, and that is legit, that is more of an unknown than the absolute fact that the salary cap dictates that we can not have the Finishing 5, Rivers, and Asik on the books.
I would think that is more fire, our attempt at a trade more smoke.
