You want a PG? The argument for MCW over Burke

I found out about this article from another site where they are having a discussion. I'm not saying I completely agree, but it is a very interesting read:

In Michael Carter-Williams we have a player who is almost certain to have a long NBA career based on his stats. His raw skills give him an outside chance to eventually become one of the top PGs in the league and a perennial all-star, which is something that can be said about only a few prospects each year. That makes him an intriguing prospect. Right now his arc is somewhere between journeyman and perennial all-star. Because I generally prefer upside in prospects I would have to rank him as the top PG available in the 2013 draft. The only reason to draft Trey Burke ahead of him would be if it were for a team that absolutely needed immediate help at PG and the draft was the only place they could fill this need.

He average 35 minutes and produce average numbers. DO NOT WANT.

Read the article. Furthermore it's his numbers that actually encourage the thought that he could be a future all-star.

Guy can't shoot and when I watched him in the tourney, it looked like he easily lost confidence. Not overly high on him.

I don't like PG's that have turnover issues.

At least the Burke argument over Rivers I can understand why some people prefer Burke. I couldn't imagine anyone would want MCW over Rivers.

Interesting. Like everyone else, my inclinination is to scream no, but it's an interesting statistical case.

Very well written, but I'm reminded of the sincerity of simplicity. Only it isn't about being sincere why I don't buy MCW over TB3. I can go 2nd half, Indiana, Final Four, drop the mic and leave.

Edit: It's the credibility of simplicity that I meant.

No way in hell I'd take MCW over Burke, ewwwww. You can analyze all the stats you want and twist them whichever way, but just watch these guys play and tell me who is better.

I don't like PGs that can't shoot and turn the ball over. Simple as that. Well written article though.

I think you guys might be selling McW short. He has only 1 year of experience playing in the spotlight. His athleticism is off the charts. His vision is second to none in this draft. Turnover problems are something that can be worked on and fixed with experience. He is a ball hawk on defense and really excels at getting steals. His shot needs work but isn't the worst. I've watched him play a lot last year and have seen him hit some pretty clutch shots. He wasnt on the most talented of teams either. Best player being cj fair and triche ain't saying much at all. I think he could def become the best pg in this draft 3-5 years down the road.

MCW can ball, I wouldn't mind picking him up at all. In a way though he reminds me of Evan Turner.

That's not a good thing.

But watch that video while squinting and TELL me it doesn't look like Vasquez out there.

He can be very good defensively and passing, but his turnovers and lack of shooting will be a problem and no guarantees he will improve on the shooting. Turnovers are hard to improve on because its a reflection of a combination of ball-handling/court vision/decision-making. If he's turning the ball over on the college level, then that's a red flag long-term on the professional level. He's getting some notice now because of how poor the draft is, but he's not worth a top 5 or top 10 pick. Mid 1st round sounds about right. He will be a much better defender than Burke, but Burke will do alot more of the floor with his shooting, ball-handling, and control of the game.

Actually a nice part at 6:00 of that video of MCW guarding Burke. Contains him very well. He's basically Vasquez with (for now) a worse shot, more TOs and better defense. Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world I guess.

Really It look like he was beat twice there but the zone prevented Trey from driving. In fact he was well behind Burke when he shot the ball. I'm surprised DX put that clip in as a plus for Carter-Williams.

Well TB beat him eventually but he stayed in front pretty well for such a tall guy. But yea, TB beat him and got the shot off, one that he makes a lot.

His vision is excellent. He makes those turnovers from forcing things too much and sort of panicking off pressure. Proper coaching and hard work will fix that. If he's a hard worker and from reports he is a gym rat and a student of the game then I don't see it being a problem. It's his first year playing at that level. He's not a 2-4 years college vet man. Everything u stated are problems but are absolutely fixable. Vision is nt his problem tho. It's 1 of his attributes.

Burke isn't exactly the easier guy to stay in front of lol. Very crafty. I think it was a good thing being in there. He stayed in front him for a min but eventually got by him but he forced him to the correct side. Not a bad thing cuz Burke eventually got by him lol. It will happen.

I hope the Pelicans don't draft MCW.

The lack of data on his defense concerns me. Don't get me wrong, he could be an elite defender--but Syracuse's zone means we are taking a gamble on that. Our current 6'6" PG is just too slow to guard the elite PGs of the league, and I'm not convinced that MCW is leaps and bounds quicker than Vasquez.

I guess I just don't see him ever giving us much more than Vasquez already gives us.

His athleticism Is his strong point. Very quick and fast. Not an issue whatsoever
