    Hornets tax break is derailed/Approved on 4/30 {merged}

A tax break that's a key element of the state's new lease agreement with the New Orleans Hornets was derailed Wednesday when it failed to get the 53 votes needed to clear the Louisiana House. Lawmakers voted 49-46 for the extension of the annual $3.65 million tax break the team now gets. The break would run through 2024, with a possible five-year extension through 2029.

Well, it's part of the lease agreement. Hopefully it will pass when the session meets again. Missed by 4 votes.

I'm just going to reserve my right to panic until someone rational calms me down.

If it does not pass, the lease will not be extended and the sale will not go through. This is posturing, likely. I'll check the voting record.

Not worried about this. Some greasing of palms, and this will pass. Louisiana politiics at its' best (or worst). Jindal will lay the smack down as well.

Who, not how many. If it's mostly northern folks against it, it's almost certainly posturing. Yeah?

Because the sale hasn't even gone through yet and it's politics, nothing ever gets done on the first try.

WTF does this mean? I'm not very worried, but this could be a concern for those who don't really know what all this means.

This is almost certainly posturing by the NLA politicians

as it is... I see Gov. Jindal's power over this legislature... and if he wants something... he'll almost certainly get it... and we all know he's in.

Just give it time... there's 5 1/2 weeks left in this legislative session

I believe I remember getting murdered for having the audacity to question North Louisiana Politicians resolve on this.

This bill, as written, is just for the Hornets. They'll get something else to valance it and that'll be it, likely.

    Thoughts?

Getting words from a guy in the biz and will post them.

I would worry more about the 31 nays from south of the 318 area code than the 16 from the 318 area code before bashing it per this website:

Yes my rep did not vote for it and to be honest I am not that thrilled about it. No matter where at in the state we live in, we all are Louisiana residents and giving money to the Hornets will help in the longterm. It helps bring in more people which means more taxes.

My issue is with the 8 that were absent for the vote. Why the hell would they be absent? They are paid tax payer dollars so they should be there for voting. If they had been there, the vote probably would have passed.

I agree completely, all you have is one job that you get paid for and that is to vote. The position is for the good of the public, how does not even being there help the public?

I agree with you. It doesn't do any good to not be there for the vote. It should be mandatory for them to be there. I would love to see that data as to how many times members of the house were absent for votes. If it is a trend, vote their asses out.
