I was reading the forums today and saw the PelicansReport topic. And I suddenly came to realize that there are only three games left in Hornets history as we know it. The team we've always cheered for and loved or hated is only a couple of days from disappearing. Now, don't get me wrong. I was one of the few who supported the name staying as it is. However, day by day the idea of having a fresh start with an identity more connected to the city made me think it was actually a great move to do.
I felt like it's time to reflect about our team. The Hornets have had a lot of moments. Some were good, some were bad, some were beautiful and others ugly. What am I trying to say? That the moments are ours. Only we and no one else can remember the Dan Dickau-Lee Nailon season fondly. Only we can curse those sideline photographers for causing us core player injuries. Only we can remember almost losing our team forever more than once.
The 2007-2008 season is probably the one most of us remember as a great one. The team had a good roster, a great young superstar and a big future ahead of it. Who can forget our team battling against a really stacked Mavericks? The games were intense; everyone was playing their hearts out. Who can forget David West slapping Dirk Nowitzki?
Or Peja's buzzer beater against the Suns in a multiple overtime thriller?
Or who can forget the very recent but still amazing moment of truth when we won Anthony Davis?
The New Orleans Hornets may be gone soon, but their memories will live with us forever. The Pelicans are near us all and it's almost time. Personally, my love for the team grows everyday, and it's because of having lived so many situations, so many emotional rollercoasters that the team went through. I'll always love my Hornets, nobody can take that away from me.
This is yet another one of these landmark moments, perhaps the biggest one along with the new ownership and if everything goes well, with AD's selection and lottery win. And it's a really exciting time to be experiencing. We have the chance to be there when it all starts, when it all begins. There aren't many teams that can allow themselves to say they have a future as bright as ours. Now all we can do is hope that a bright future can one day become an amazing present.
Adieu Hornets, Hello Pelicans.
