This is all part of the process. Offer him something, he goes and tests the market and gets a better deal then so be it.

At the very least, he comes back with a deal and sees if we'll match or beat it.
I'm cool with that. Unless this is all a rouse so we'll accept the crazy deal when he signs it. But why would another team play along to help our PR?

They wouldn't unless they were specifically trying to hurt the Pelicans. But seriously. There are bigger fish to fry for the Pacers than spend time trying to jerk around Pelicans management.
This is all Jrue's agent doing everything he can to try make Pelicans blink. "deep in talks" is probably truthfully, "Jrue returned a missed call."
I think you nailed it in your first sentence here. All of that goodwill we built with Jrue maybe comes down to him giving us a chance to match. Seriously, let him go and get some offers and then when he comes back match it and give him a 5th year. Let him set his market but tell him we will match anything and add the extra year nobody else can. Unless someone offers him something crazy of course.
