    Buddy at the SF Position

Could we utilize Buddy at the 3?

Buddy is a shooter AND slasher with an NBA ready body.

At 6'5", 212lbs with a 6'9" 1/4 wingspan, he can still get bigger when he starts an NBA weight training program.
He is already heavier and more muscular than Bazemore, but Bazemore has over an inch longer wingspan.
Also, Buddy measured a 40" vertical at Lakers workouts, while Bazemore caps out at a 30.8".

I'm not saying don't try to sign Bazemore, as he'd be great for the team.

I'm only wondering if Buddy could develop into guarding NBA 3s. That would make us extremely flexible if he can play multiple positions. At OU he could also run the offense and could possibly play the NBA point at times with his athleticism.

Buddy will be able to guard 1-2 in the NBA and might be able to hold his own if he gets switched onto a 3. But no he can't play SF.

I'm just hoping Buddy works out at as a competent starter at SG and not be a defensive liability against 1s and 2s.

He's bigger than Bazemore, just slightly shorter arms.

Buddy will be able to play the 3 in small ball lineups, but no he will not be able to start at the 3 if that's what you're asking.

Bazemore really tested with a 30 inch vertical? If so, I officially hold no stock in the combine any longer. Baze is explosive.

This isn't as ridiculous a theory as some of you are making it.

I never said he'd start at SF, but could learn to guard 3s with his bulk.
Many undersized players use their athleticism and strength to play the 3.

I think we might be able to utilize him there with some smallball lineups to space the floor.

For instance, if Gordon comes back (albeit at a discount) they could go with

    Jrue
    Gordon
    Hield
    Babbitt
    Davis

for a few minutes with EVERYBODY raining 3s. (and just trying to outgun opponents)

It's not out of the question, but like others have said it would only be for spurts. But if we want to go with a small, transition-oriented lineup, having Buddy on the wing along with 2 other ball handlers should theoretically get buckets even though it may give up just as many.

If Bazemofe can play it I see no reason why Buddy can't. One important thing he actually has is the strength and weight to put a body on some guys. Still would not be something I would throw out there except for when Gentry likes to go with his small ball lineups having 3 guards on the floor. I'm sure we will see him at SF at times but not something you should expect to see often.

Lets see how his body settles in once he gets on the NBA diet(HGH) and puts on some more muscle. Where he settles in at strength wise I think is going to be a big factor in his versatility.

Maybe in a couple of seasons if he develops into a solid defender you could run him at the 3 for short spurts for matchup purposes but long term I think what you really just want out of Hield is the ability to switch up and down positions with competence and without being a liability.

    But can he play safety?

Im surprised everyone is laughing at that. Odds are no we can't, but doesn't mean that if we can't sign a top notch SF, we don't look at a 3 guard set.
IS Qincy a SG or SF? Is Baze a SG or SF?

If a team tries some 3 guard lineup, then yeah, we can counter with maybe Frazier, Holiday, and Hield. But it's not a lineup we would wanna roll with often.
