"The pelican is fearsome. Take a raven, for example: it's omnivorous. It eats bugs, and seeds, and fruit, and carrion. Compared to the well-rounded citizen that is the raven, the pelican is the serial killer of birds." - Barry Petchesky, Deadspin

This would be awesome, but personally I would love to be matched up agst memphis. I think our roster dominates them.

Much more intriguing to me and has absolutely nothing to do with us making the playoffs. Those match ups are much more enticing.

Playing the Grizzles or Trailblazers in the playoffs would be a dream scenario for me.

I believe after tonight's games that you would get your wish since OKC's win moved them a 1/2 game back over the Pelicans

The only problem this poses is the possibility of alienating large markets. Would be great for basketball but horrible for ratings. Like for instance if college football went to a playoff system where only conference champions could be in. Would kill ratings if a bama or USC or Ohio state didn't make it

This cuts both ways in either system - the current NBA one or the proposed top 16 teams in the league - so it's a net wash.

But unequivocally you put better quality into the playoffs. So that alone puts the proposed system ahead. And quality plus the same amount of market representation means ratings would likely increase.

I'm not a big fan of this change. The current system isn't necessarily broken. I'm not sure if it's even tilted. There seems to be a good balance of East and West teams winning the championship. if anything the East probably have more. Maybe that's not the point but it does have balance.

I understand teams in the West this year have more wins but it shouldn't call for any change.

It certainly isn't broken, but can it be improved? I think the answer is absolutely. Should it be? That seems to be the debate.

To me anything that increases the quality of the product I am in favor of.

updated following the games on 3/25...

    1) Warriors
    2) Hawks
    3) Grizzlies
    4) Rockets
    5) Clippers
    6) Cavaliers
    7) Trail Blazers
    8) Spurs
    9) Mavericks
    10) Bulls
    11) Raptors
    12) Thunder
    13) Wizards
    14) Suns
    15) Pelicans
    16) Bucks

    match-ups in bracket form:

    MIL/GSW
    DAL/SAS

    WAS/HOU
    OKC/LAC

    PHX/MEM
    TOR/CLE

    CHI/POR
    NOP/ATL

and just to note... the Pelicans magic # to clinching a playoff berth would be 7 over Miami if my math is correct

Was that Spurs/Thunder game played in San Antonio or in a woodshed?
If you Jimmer it, they will come.

  15. #15
updated pregame 4/8... again all based off of win percentage alone (unless tied... then I go by NBA tiebreak procedure)

    1) Warriors
    2) Hawks
    3) Rockets
    4) Grizzlies
    5) Clippers
    6) Cavaliers (hold conference record tiebreaker over POR)
    7) Trail Blazers
    8) Spurs
    9) Bulls (hold conference record tiebreaker over DAL)
    10) Mavericks
    11) Raptors
    12) Wizards
    13) Pelicans
    14) Thunder
    15) Suns
    16) Bucks

    in bracket form:
    MIL/GSW
    CHI/SAS

    NOP/MEM
    WAS/LAC

    TOR/CLE
    OKC/HOU

    DAL/POR
    PHX/ATL

edit: and OKC would currently be the last team that clinched a playoff berth... BKN, BOS & UTA would be in the mix for the final 2 spots

That would be like the ideal matchup haha. Hopefully one day we will get to something like this.

FINAL STANDINGS... if they took just the top 16

    1) Warriors
    2) Hawks
    3) Rockets
    4) Clippers
    5) Grizzlies
    6) Spurs
    7) Cavaliers
    8) Trail Blazers
    9) Bulls (hold conference record tiebreaker over DAL)
    10) Mavericks
    11) Raptors
    12) Wizards
    13) Pelicans
    14) Thunder
    15) Bucks
    16) Celtics

    Brackets:

    BOS/GSW
    CHI/POR

    NOP/LAC
    WAS/MEM

    TOR/SAS
    OKC/HOU

    DAL/CLE
    MIL/ATL

  18. #18
So basically trade OKC for Brooklyn and scramble the matchups.

  19. #19
Nop/Lac is actually an epic matchup that I think we would have a punchers chance of winning.

If the NBA really went to best 16 total, does anyone else think they would change the seeding system?

Maybe make it 1-8 and 9-16 for the 1st round, then go 1-16 for after 8 are eliminated?
