Real-Plus Minus is a newer statistic.

ORPM: Player's estimated on-court impact on team offensive performance, measured in points scored per 100 offensive possessions.

DRPM: Player's estimated on-court impact on team defensive performance, measured in points allowed per 100 defensive possessions.

RPM: Player's estimated on-court impact on team performance, measured in net point differential per 100 offensive and defensive possessions. RPM takes into account teammates, opponents and additional factors.

What a polarizing player Greg Stiemsa is. He gave up the most on offensive by far but he also had the most positive impact on defense for the Pelicans.

What about the Real Plus-Minus? Does anyone care about the Real Plus-Minus?

I'm guessing this has nothing to do with RPM either.

Color me extremely skeptical of any statistic that tells me Steimsma had the most positive impact on our defense last year out of all players.

    I should have clarified this.

DRPM: Player's estimated on-court impact on team defensive performance, measured in points allowed per 100 defensive possessions.

The same statistic tells you he had the most negative impact on the offense too, which I'm guessing you're not skeptical of. It doesn't necessarily mean overall impact because obviously he didn't play as many minutes as AD and Aminu.

I put this information on the initial post too.

Any stat that has AFA 4th best on the team, and Morrow and Evans in the minus, I really don't care about.

One of my professors at KU "created" RPM:

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/10...eal-plus-minus

With that in mind, I wouldn't place too much stock in it.

First, ESPN isn't publishing what goes into RPM. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad measure, but it raises eyebrows.

Probably the best article I've found about RPM is here, where they visit the APBR board to try to find the full RPM methodology:

    http://www.hickory-high.com/is-espns...inus-for-real/

A couple of points from the article:

    1. RPM uses data from the prior year to reduce noise.

    2. RPM contains a height-based prior which boosts the defensive ratings of all taller players.

So in the case of Stiemsma, for example, his DRPM is boosted by his height, and influenced by his time in Minnesota. You can see where this can create problems.

Despite ESPN's tenacity, any "all-inclusive" metric to rank players (PER and now RPM; QBR in football) is going to be hugely flawed. It's just too complex a game to tie every factor into one number.

The whole point of the RPM seems like an exercise in futility. How can you possible factor out who a guy is on the court with whether it be teammates of opponents?

That's interesting. I don't know anything about this or the accuracy of that claim. How reliable is that source? I have no idea. Assuming the article is correct and the height is included it probably wouldn't be a large component of the formula. No plus minus is perfect and each has flaws but this one seems to be better than the others. It does make sense that a center has more impact on defense than a point guard.

    The top 10 defensive RPM:
    1 Kevin Garnett
    2 Larry Sanders
    3 Marc Gasol
    4 Tim Duncan
    5 Dwight Howard
    6 Andre Iguodala
    7 Omer Asik
    8 Andrew Bogut
    9 Tiago Splitter
    10 Nene Hilario

    Seems pretty legit to me.

The RPM seems to doing a fairly decent job when it has LeBron James #1, Chris Paul #2, Andre Iguodala #3, Kevin Durant #4, Dirk Nowitzki #5.

I don't know the formula but I'm sure there is a way to do it fairly accurately. You'd have to read up more on the Real Plus-Minus and then decide for yourself because I'm not going to pretend to know everything about it.
