Speaking on a national teleconference call Thursday afternoon, Webber said it’s already clear that nobody would like the Hornets to become the Pelicans.
"Come on, everybody in the world knows that’s the worst name ever thought of and they’re going to be a joke,’’ Webber said. "I would hate to be from New Orleans and go somewhere and people tease me about being a Pelican fan.’’
Benson has not filed a formal application with the NBA to change the franchise’s name to the Pelicans. But he is seriously considering it, according to league sources. Benson has actively pushed for a name change and he has owned the rights to the Pelican nickname for years. The Pelicans were a minor league baseball team in New Orleans from 1887 to 1959 and again in 1977.

Can't find it in my heart to give a damn about anything Chris Webber thinks.
Exactly why the name SHOULD be Pelicans. The more these out-of-towners complain, the more I love the name.

I agree with him about the name being awful, but he's clearly ignoring the other awful names in the league.
Other teams having bad names shouldn't be a reason for us to accept this bad name

I like Chris Webber as a player and analyst and the name does suck.

People are that worried about a team name? It's a name of a freaking Bird. A BIRD atleast its our State Bird. It's not generic or the name of another team or after its owner...It doesn't have many good names out their to rep Louisiana other than Pelicans. You may think its bad but others are really gimmicky, lame, or corny. Atleast it has history and meaning. It's the right name. That's all that should matter not that it sounds cool.

There's 2 other names for sure most people like and fit this area better than Pelicans. I haven't seen one of those damned things around here in decades now that I think about it.

do you go to the lakefront? have you driven on the twin span or causeway? b/c i see brown pelicans all the time there

I see them on my way to UNO nearly every day. The day it was reported i stopped by the water because i saw a few and just watched them for a minute. I didn't know how i felt about the name for a while but after watching them i was cool with it. There were 3 of them on 3 different widely spaced apart posts, and you could tell they were working together to keep a lookout for the next kill
People outside of Louisiana won't know what a Krewe is and Brass is like us saying "oh my gosh I just wish we were like totally the Jazz, but since not well let's just copy it closely as possible" jazz is played with Brass instruments ya know, I'm just saying.

Southshore? Since the storm I rarely go there anymore, but prior went to school at UNO for...years and NEVER saw them all my years of hanging on the lakefront while there. Saw them decades ago when the population made a rebound but they seemed to fall off again. Got no business on the northshore so nay there. So for me, and probably plenty others, been a long while seeing one of them here. Saw them quite often while closer to the equator though.
Other hand, I see brass almost everyday and krewes every February/March. .

Of all the people who like Brass, and there are a lot I've come across, none think it's trying to copy Jazz. I don't think Seahawks fans think they're trying to copy the Falcons or Eagles. I'm quite certain if they were to go with Krewe, the talking heads at the alphabet stations and every news article on it will spend the 1 short sentence required to explain the spelling. It ain't complicated and basically means the same as "crew" anyway.
