Thread: SI thinks a rebrand is on the way

  1. #76
I read that SI story. I like the idea of a rebranding. They should call the NBA team The Saints. I'm not kidding either. Go with a black and gold color scheme, and if they wanted to they could leave a little bit of that creole blue in there in small doses. What better way to bind that team to the city. The connection would then be instinctive. When I was a kid St. Louis had the baseball Cardinals and the football Cardinals. This would be a very old school thing to do, and a very New Orleans thing to do. The problem is, I'm not sure the league would go with it, not to mention Tom Benson. I really think it would create instant pride in that franchise. They could go with a classic NBA look. Model the uniforms on something simple like the Celtics, but use black and gold and maybe a font similar to the one on the Hornets uniforms now. It would stand out in the NBA. This would be a bold and old school move.

More seriously, what does Krewe mean ?? (french fan here)
During Mardi Gras each parade club is referred to as a Krewe, i.e Krewe of Muses, Krewe D'Etat, etc.

Thanks for the answer : )

The only name I've heard that I like is Brass and I'm not completely sold on it.

How about New Orleans Mayhem? It's fitting in a lot of ways, without an actual hurricane reference.

I see your argument as there is most definitely a negative connotation to it but depends on how you look at it. It could be viewed similar to Tulane "Green Wave".

Also like the New Orleans Jam. Jam being short for Jambalaya as well as an obvious basketball reference.

Jam is not bad at all.

Emeka Okafor - Joe Smith - Carmelo Anthony - Manu Ginobili - Jason Williams

Al Jefferson - James Posey - Aaron McKie - Shaun Livingston

The only thing I will miss with a rebrand is the fleur-de-bee. That thing is awesome and I refuse to buy merchandise that has the other bee logo on it instead of the fleur-de-bee.

No offense, but that sounds like a low single A minor league team's name.

The Jam sounds...corny. Like, I get it. You get it. We all get it here. But to anyone who doesn't really think of jambalaya as a New Orleans thing (or ever, honestly) it's just a really generic team name.

I still don't know of a good name to switch to. I agree that the Hornets have a taint that could do with fixing, but I haven't heard a single name that makes me go, "Oh, yeah. That's it."

I honestly like the Voodoo the most. I don't know if they could use that name or not, but Voodoo with the black and gold would be different. Would give us a mystique. I'm ok with the Brass. But have the same feeling of, "it's ok".

Humidity, Funk, Rebirth, River, Levee, Crescent, Termites, Mosquitos, Gators, Oaks, Deltas, Magnolia, Moss, Boot, Voodoo, Brass, Krewe, etc.

With as much history and culture this city has, there has to be something. Not making suggestions as much as trying to get the thought process going. Whatever is chosen, remember everyone laughed at Thunder as a name. No one thinks twice about it anymore.

I know people in Charlotte and New Orleans want this to happen but personally I don't think it will.
Krewe and Brass sound great, Bucs sounds like Bucks, ArcAngels can get cheesy really quick. What ever they pick will probably be lame as hell. At the end of the day the best name for our team belongs to the church of latter day Saints.

Um, it's pretty terrible. So is Arc Angels. No offense but these might be the two worst potential names I've ever heard with the exception maybe being that stupid dragon thing.

    1. Jazz - pipedream
    2. VooDoo - unfortunately wasted on a dumbass AFL team
    3. Krewe - meh
    4. Pelicans - more of a baseball name
    5. Nutria - Come on, who wouldn't want a giant rat on all their team apparel?

I'd much rather a singular noun that could be pluralized (in the same vain of the Saints and the Hornets) as opposed to nouns that usually aren't (Krewe, Brass, etc.). Just my $0.02.

I like the Angles, Bucs, and Pelicans ideas. The Bucs and Pelicans mostly because they reference New Orleans sports teams from the past.

Yeah Nutria gets it done. "I'm in".

Pelicans would be a silly name as well. VooDoo isn't an option. The Jazz got wasted. I wouldn't take it back after seeing annoying Utah fans cheer it on for so many years. I don't like Krewe that much as I used to, but it's ok, just like Brass is ok, but it can't be any worse than Ragin Cajuns.

Agreed. Most posters here are concerned about prevailing opinion of those OUTSIDE of New Orleans...our national image. But honestly, who cares about the opinions of those who will never support our team?

Shouldn't we simply find a name that captures the city's identity and roll with it regardless of what fans of other teams think?

A poster above mentioned how "silly" the name Thunder sounded, yet a few years of success have turned that concern into an afterthought.

Arc Angels or Archangels can be a mouthful, but it makes so much sense from both a bball and a cultural PoV. Hornets78 gave a brilliant explanation of the name above.

IMO, "Mudbugs" or "Brass" would be cool as secondary options but lack the significance of Arc Angels.

Heavy hitters like Jazz and Voodoo (what a waste) are already taken.

The name only needs to be a home run for OUR fans. If "Thunder" works for OKC, why can't Arc Angels work for us?

    Winner: New Orleans Humidity

Have steam and fog throughout the arena. Instead of confetti after a win, it starts to rain. For a mascot we could have a giant Sprinkler.
