Donald Sloan in Hornets?
I actually really liked the dude, he was pretty handy in cleveland earlier this year. But I don't really see the point he is a scoring backup at best ala Roberts. Liking the fact we are utilising the D-league now, think there could be some role players down there.
wasnt he on the team not long ago.
Yeh he was on the team last year. I really liked him.
Does this mean Brian Roberts is getting the let go..
Really do not understand this.
Only $100,000 of Roberts $473,000 is guaranteed as of right now. It becomes fully guaranteed by 5 EST on Monday. Hornets could let him go and save money, which is obviously a priority as we have seen them dump a trade asset to save $500,000 and release McGuire before his deal became guaranteed.
Something to watch out for. We will know by tomorrow
I don't think i'd consider McGuire a big trade asset. They wouldn't dump Roberts, people are high on him. I don't think it's likely, but GV being shipped out and Roberts being moved to starter short-term seems more likely than Roberts being cut. There's no reason for it. I think the McGuire signing was more to send a message to Aminu.
But I am surprised they went the PG route instead of a stretch 3
I should have been more clear. I said they dumped a trade asset AND released McGuire. The trade asset was Warrick's (Or Carroll's) expiring contract. Those were nice chips to make salaries work and they were dumped to put $500,000 in Benson's pocket.
Calling up Sloan means one of three things:
1.) Release Roberts- It would be cold, but is he really that much better than Sloan, especially when you consider the Hornets are going nowhere. It's business. Is Roberts worth the extra $300,000?
2.) Rivers to D-League- possible I suppose
3.) A trade- Maybe Roberts or Henry is part of a deal the Hornets have on the table
I just think #1 is very likely because of the timing of the move. Why now? Why bring up Sloan the day before you have to make the decision on Roberts and why bring up a guard when, for the first time all year, all 5 of your guards are healthy?
I think it's dumb. Roberts has been pretty solid as a back up and has put up good numbers. Just to save a few bucks, is it really worth it? If the guy was earning a couple million then I can understand but he's not earning a whole lot. For a guy like Roberts he's been a pleasant surprise for this team, despite all the hate he gets.
As much as people scoff at the idea of 500k here and 300k there, what sense does it make to take out near a mill from your bottom line from a team that has NO chance to even make the playoffs; even to a billionaire? Seems shrewd and it is to a degree, but I think it's smart.
I scoff at it as a fan/analyst but I completely get it from a business standpoint and agree that if someone isnt going to recoup you that money either in ticket sales or performance, then it is smart to be cold and save some money
But I cant get excited about that as a fan, nor can I advocate that these are the best moves for us on court as an analyst. That is my problem with these moves, and I will be willing to wager that if this comes to pass with Roberts, most people will be pretty upset. Hope I'm wrong, but the evidence is mounting up
I think the plan is to put Aminu back in the starting lineup for the remainder of the season to see what he has and with Gordon coming back it really sealed his fate. Roberts would probably only getting 12-15 mpg from here on.
The one thing I hope as a fan, is that we're saving to spend down the line. I can get on board with saving a million in a lost season because we know we're going to have to overpay in FA.
I have no problem with this. I think from an impact standpoint the two are comparable. But if you can get a younger, bigger and better athlete at a savings, you make that move.
Trading out Roberts for Sloan doesn't make us worse in any category, but from a talent stand point does move us further, even if only by an inch.
Maybe dumping Roberts and picking up Sloan so there is more minutes able to be allocated to Rivers development? After all he is the bigger investment than Roberts.
Get to see this in person now -
Ever since Wanted I think Sloan is an awesome name to scream to the heavens in angry. Just try it.
SLOAN! Could be his scoring song thingy.
Was never able to put together where I knew that name from.
I hope that if they do release Roberts it's because they want to groom Rivers at PG.
I've been saying this all season, but I guess with Gordon being out it was hard for him not to be put at SG.
However if they aren't doing it purely to save money then why bring in Sloan.....wont he take minutes off Rivers?
Jimmy Smith @JimmySmithtp
former #Hornets point guard Donald Sloan sign again to 10 day contract.
I hope Donald Sloan is better playmaker then Roberts. Rivers have to become more consistent at 3PT shots, he can also learn from Gordon how to finish at the rim or draw a foul.
i would say, Sloan is the better scorer, Roberts is the better shooter, and they are both no the best playmakers
just give me a PG who can get to the hoop please
Sloan can definitely do that. Finishes well from what I've seen and remember.Quote:

I found some answers for you here.

On February 8, 2012, he signed a 10-day contract with the New Orleans Hornets.[16] He was not re-signed after that 10-day contract expired,[17] but he later joined the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 16. On December 25, 2012, Sloan was waived by the Cavaliers.

Monty Williams on the Sloan signing: “We need some coverage at that position. I’m playing Greivis (Vasquez) a lot of minutes, sometimes the whole second half. That’s not something we want to do all year. So we’re going to take a look at a few guys and see if anybody sticks. We’re always trying to add guys to help our program. (Sloan) was here last year, so he has an idea of what we expect. He’s a tough kid. What I liked about him last year was his ability to defend and attack the basket. He wasn’t afraid of anyone or big moments. So we’ll see how it goes. (Jarrett) Jack was out last year, and (Sloan) was pretty good for us. When Jack came back, that was a tough cut, because we liked him a lot. He worked his butt off. We’d like it to go well this time.”

instead of sloan, lets get bobby brown again
Sloans first contribution to the Hornets was falling over while backpedaling.
Based on Monty's quotes they really liked him and he became available. so they brought him back in. It could be as innocent as they think he'd make a good practice player. Do you really prepare for the imminent departure of guys that are minimum level trade filler?
I agree with 225, you don't bring in a guy on a 10-day to replace someone that has been here the entire season. We are talking minimum salaries here. If we wanted Roberts gone we would have released him before the deadline yesterday. Unless he is just going to be used as a throw in but I don't see that happening.
Lets say there is a trade in the works, GV is involved... Roberts moves up, you now need a third PG. It would makes sense that you bring in Sloan, if you actually liked him and wish you could have kept him.
Or GV is not involved, but Roberts is a filler, so you need to replace Roberts.
I'm sorry to the GV lovers, but i'm still hoping for something like... the 1st, GV and Henry/Smith for Jennings and Sanders.
GV is not going anywhere. He is the heart and soul of this team.
Everything is for sale for the right price. Vasquez has quite a few positives, if a GM doesn't do his due diligence I can see them overvaluing his production. Or maybe the potential trade partner already has a creator at SG and thinks they can mask GV's deficiencies like we think/hope Gordon does. Milwaukee would fit that bill if they decided that Ellis was the guard they were keeping. If their goal is just to be a playoff also ran I think Vasquez could help get them there on a much cheaper contract with a much more fan friendly attitude.

Donte Greene had agreed to a contract with the Brooklyn Nets prior to the season, but he broke his ankle during a workout.
Greene is now healthy and according to Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld, he plans to start working out for teams on Jan. 11.
Kennedy lists the Nets, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Hornets and San Antonio Spurs as the teams that have interest in the forward.
Saw this on ESPN today, do you think the Hornets would want to sign Green? I don't know much about him.
There is no way demps would put his team in a position where brian friggin roberts would be the team's starting pg.
And I don't think GV is going anywhere at least this year. Monty brought in Sloan to relieve GV of minutes he plays. He wouldn't care about GV's minutes if we were about to trade him.
Skiles is now out, a lot of the fans have been praying for the "True" Tank for a long time. With the team for sale, the Bucks being a purgatory team every year and now a coaching change, their tank maybe rolling. Jennings was Skiles' guy, basically gave him the ball and free run, i don't see this move making for a more happier marriage.
Great talent, good ball handler, good 3pt shooter and 6'11, that was coming in to the NBA, had the misfortune of being drafted by the Kings and also being a 3/stretch 4, playing for the Kings. If we do have interest, it does strengthen my belief that some one like X or Smith maybe shipped out in some kind of package.
With Eric Gordon at the 2 you could start anyone at PG, at least right now, even Brian Roberts short term and i could tolerate it if i knew something better was coming. But i was just talking about Roberts minutes increasing, until, say... a Brandon Jennings learned the ropes during his orientation period.
Team will not re-sign Sloan. Roberts listed as day-to-day.
