Play on words. New Orleans Pride. Pride in being a New Orleanian. A group of lions is called a pride. There's the logo for an abstract concept, embedded right in the name.

Well, that's the thing. Being a port city of the river, LA being on the Gulf of Mexico, and our strong French background, those names make a lot of sense. I would like a Lion mascot as much as the next guy, but LA and Lion really don't mesh.

Edit: That's not to say I don't like the name, New Orleans Pride or Pride of New Orleans. I think it sounds great.

Not a fan of these esoteric names like Soul, Pride, Passion, Emo, etc. Sorry.

You're thinking too local though. Nationally and internationally, the Lion logo works and the pride give homage to the city without being too kitschy.

I wish we knew which names the team is considering so we can narrow down the options and agree on a few.

For the record my top 2: 1. Brass 2. Breakers

If you had to select your 2 favorite what would they be? (assuming we can't get Jazz, as I think that is the overwhelming favorite)

We'll just have to disagree on that one. If you can put a nickname on any city and have it work then, to me, it isn't a very good nickname. How many cities are out there that don't have any civic 'pride?

Don't think pistols will pass the Stern test. not a bad idea though

As far as pick the top two, excluding Jazz, I would say:

1) Voodoo (not necessarily using the current AFL logo/colors)
2) Brass (significantly distant second)

See above. I'm also receptive to Buccaneers or Privateers and a couple of others I've heard but since I had to pick two I went with Voodoo and Brass.

I'm unsure on VooDoo but could be swayed. I'm not a fan of the current logo and color scheme which is the main reason I don't like it. It would have to look more professional for it to work IMO

It was, in fact, Abe Polan the team owner but... the league will never allow a team to be called the pistols. Even if it's an obvious Maravich reference... just in light of Gilbert Arenas and other considerations.
